A man in Pakistan has been arrested in connection to the murder of his transgender daughter.

Maya, a 19-year-old transgender woman from the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had left home and was living with friends in the city of Peshawar, reports The Independent.

When her family attempted to bring her home on Saturday, Maya’s friends contacted the police fearing for her safety.

But the officers allowed family members to take Maya home to the city of Nowshera after the teen’s father, Aurangzeb Akbar, provided the police with a written assurance that he would not harm his child.

Police noted that Akbar was “upset” that his daughter was transgender.

Several hours later, Maya’s bullet-ridden body was discovered beside a river bank in Nowshera.

On Sunday, police announced that Akbar had been arrested and are also searching for Maya’s uncle and brothers, according to Pakistan’s Samaa TV.

The transgender community in the city have staged protests in the wake of her death.
