A tearful Katy Perry surprised a survivor of the Pulse Orlando shooting live on Ellen.

Fighting against her emotions as she arrives, Katy hugs Pulse Orlando nightclub shooting survivor Tony Marrero during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show — a meeting Katy reveals left her shaking beforehand.

After the shock of the star arrving, Tony explained how Katy’s lyrics in her song Rise helped him recover after receiving four gunshot wounds during the attack earlier this year. He explained: “The lyrics to that song are so powerful, every word in that song is just powerful, so I embraced it.”

Marrero adding: “I just want to say thank you for everything you do. Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day that I was in the hospital all the way to now.” Katy replying: “I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you.”

After learning of his dreams to train at his first year at film school, Katy also offered to pay for his first year of education.

After the surprise, the music star tweeted a photo of the pair with the tag: “I was so inspired by @OnePulseTony story & strength that I had to meet him.”

Ellen also taking to Twitter to discuss the moment, writing: “This is one of the most emotional segments to ever happen on my show. Thank you, @KatyPerry

Tony later posted a photo of Katy and himself via his personal Instagram account, under the caption: “We talked about life and I can’t wait to share that story with you guys.”

Katy later gave her 95.2 million followers a link to the Pulse Orlando victims fund if they wanted to donate to the cause.
