The assault left Brandon with a fractured skull and bruised ribs. He was unable to open one of his eyes for nearly three weeks.

At a press conference on Sunday, Victoria Police Detective Senior Constable Shane Flannery called the incident “a homophobic attack on someone who was minding his own business” and asked for those with information to come forward. Brandon wasn’t able to describe his assailants other than they were three caucasian men.

He told The Age he hopes his experience won’t make others fear for their safety. “I think more people should go out and enjoy life.”

While police have claimed the attack was an isolated incident, a woman was attacked by three white men while walking her dog in Sale, Victoria, about 130 miles away. She reported one of her assailants made a negative remark about her t-shirt, which read, “Born fabulous, not straight,” before punching her in the nose.
