‘I’m leaping with joy like a bird’

Yesterday, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.

It was a historic moment for the country and many people gathered outside of the legislature building to hear the ruling. People cheered, laughed and cried when the ruling was handed down.

The Council of Grand Justices ruled that it was unconstitutional to discriminate against same-sex couples. The court gave legislators two years to make the changes, after which they would come in automatically.

Some observers have said the changes could come in as soon as June.

Chi Chia-Wei has been a long-time activist and was responsible for launching the legal proceedings in the Constitutional Court.

Needless to say he was ecstatic at the decision.

‘I’m leaping with joy like a bird,’ he told The Telegraph.
