“I just want to make sure he gets to have a family when he wants one.”
A lot of stars make time for gay rights, but for 50 Shades of Grey star Marcia Gay Harden, the cause is personal: Her 13-year-old son, Hudson, is gay and she’s determined to make sure he inherits a future where his rights are guaranteed.
The 58-year-old Oscar winner brought Hudson to the the Family Equality Council’s annual Impact Awards in L.A. earlier this month, where Armie Hammer, Beau Bridges, Lance Bass, Peter Paige and Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown, were also in attendance. “The cause is dear to me,” Harden told Us Weekly. “My son is gay. I just want to make sure he gets to have a family when he wants one.”
Harden and ex-husband Thaddaeus Scheel are also parents of Hudson’s twin sister, Julitta, and daughter Eulala, 19. She’s been an LGBT ally for years, and even joined the cast of CBS’ Code Black in wearing purple for Spirit Day.

Nate Berkus and husband Jeremiah Brent were honored by at Family Equality Council gala, where Hammer presented them with the group’s Murray-Reese Family Award. The stars of TLC’s Nate & Jeremiah, Brent and Berkus are expecting their second child.
“We meet different families from all different walks of life,” said Berkus, “and through the exercise of home makeovers we try to break down the barriers and normalize the way our family looks and the way our family loves and copes and exists to the people in the middle of the country that may not know a family with two dads at the heart and at the helm.”
