A symbolic project is now underway in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood, as 14 colorful crosswalks are being installed along North Halsted.

Thirteen of the crosswalks will feature the rainbow design on the one-mile stretch of Halsted from Aldine north to Bradley, excluding Addison. The 14th crosswalk at Melrose will be dedicated to the transgender community with the inclusion of the blue, pink and white stripes found on the transgender flag.

The project, sponsored by the Northalsted Business Alliance and paid for using gate donations from Chicago Pride Fest and Northalsted Market Days, got underway on Thursday and should be completed just in time for Pride 2019.

Residents and visitors were quick to begin posting photos with the colorful crosswalks to social media.
