"I'm not very good at crafting the public image version of me. I'm just not. I'm too messy of a person, and I care too much about being able to be a real dimensional human being."

The gay singer that drew attention with his All-American-Boy song seems to face criticism on the Internet. He’s a good looking gay man (honestly, what gay man isn’t?) and he did not avoid to admit that he uses his looks to take some advantages. And why wouldn’t he? He’s a popular singer and he’s young. However, criticism is part of the Internet.

Last year Steve posted a photo on his Instagram account with him wearing sexy bathing slips captioning #Chicago #summertime #boatseason #speedo. Some loved it and others said the bathing suit was “too gay.”

But Steve talked about the way he’s coping with such attitudes, and revealed that he tried not to bother much about them.

“I try not to pay too much attention. At some point in life it’s important to realize that no matter what you do, people are going to have something to say about it so you may as well do/wear what makes you happy.”

Sadly, some gay men criticized Steve saying that he is showing off.

“I’ve seen a small number of gay men criticize my choice of swimwear for being immodest and ‘stereotypically gay.’ People are entitled to feel however they feel, but again, I wear what I wear for me and not for them; because it makes me feel good. I’m not looking for everyone’s approval all of the time.”

“There is a time and place for modesty, but, for me at least, a hot summer day in Chicago, on a boat with a bunch of other gay dudes is not one of them.”

Recently, all the criticism got at Steve Grand and he sent an ironic message during an interview.

“I’m not so bad. People have (such) incredibly low expectations of me, that I just need to show up. For my performances, I need to not be terrible and people will be impressed. I just know people have really, really low expectations of me and that’s what the Internet does. I’m such an easy person to target. Young, good-looking, white, gay men—we love to hate those people.”

Grand, 26, also had a confession to make: “I don’t like the me that most people probably see,” proclaiming that he’s a “weird guy trapped in a douchey gym guy’s body.”

He also talked about the struggle of overcoming criticism, how he expected to be understood and when he realized that’s not going to happen he just stopped caring, or rather, reveling in not caring.

All and all, the guy wants to be who he is and reflect his true self, and if that’s a hot, white, gay man, what’s the problem?

“I’m not very good at crafting the public image version of me. I’m just not. I’m too messy of a person, and I care too much about being able to be a real dimensional human being,” Steve Grand concluded.

What do you think about Steve Grand’s style? Do you think he’s showing off, or he’s just a guy who looks good and true to who he is, not hiding his hot body.

  1. Oohh..come on. You are talented, good looking and all that jazz, so it’s okay to feel little proud.

  2. Try being young, gay, Hispanic and Catholic in an overwhelmingly religious, machismo culture.
