And viewers were not happy about it.
The Australian reality show Bride and Prejudice recently aired a heartbreaking episode that found a gay man being discarded by his parents when he tried to invite them to his wedding.
Chris never really talked about his sexuality with his religious parents, but knew going into the conversation that they don’t approve of him being gay.
“You know I’ve got very strong beliefs on that…situation,” Chris’ mother, Yvonne, replied in a heartbreaking scene that found them all crying. “So for us, that’s not an option.”
His father stayed silent through most of the exchange, but added that his son will have to live with his decisions.
When his parents said they only wanted to have contact with their son and not his fiancé, Chris told them they either can see all of him, not just part of him, or otherwise not see him at all.
“Well, if that’s the way it’s gotta be, then that’s the way it’s gotta be,” Yvonne replied.
Australian viewers quickly took to Twitter to share their outrage over the devastating scene, which left Chris in tears, saying he feels like he no longer has parents.
There's a special place reserved in fictitious hell for parents who don't accept their children for who they are #BrideAndPrejudice

If Chris is reading these tweets, I want you to know there's so much love and support out here for you. #BrideandPrejudice

Associating their son's choice with him being dead is a complete disrespect to those who have actually buried a child. #BrideandPrejudice

Buzzfeed Australia reports that, as heartbreaking as the whole scene was, Chris’ fiancé has extremely supportive parents who are welcoming Chris into their home and family.
