‘”It’s deeply disappointing, but it’s not gay” is the most iconic phrase ever spoken aloud.’

A video by a New Zealand youth LGBTI organization has gone viral for its quaint approach using farmers to teach people it’s not ok to say ‘that’s gay’.

Rainbow Youth was established in 1989 and is run entirely by young LGBTI people.

It just released its first ever national ad campaign with a funny video to change people’s minds about using the word ‘gay’ to describe something bad.

The ad star two farmers and one of them accidentally drops his meat pie on the ground.

‘Oh gay,’ says Nigel in reaction to dropping his pie.

His mate corrects him: ‘Actually Nigel, that’s not gay at all. It’s deeply disappointing, but it’s not gay.’

‘Look bro, unless that pie is a man who loves another man, then it’s not gay,’ Nigel’s mate says.

Another farmer, Muzza, then chimes in: ‘Or a woman who loves another woman.’

The video wraps up with Steve, a very burly farmer who was standing there the whole time to tell Nigel he’s ‘quite gay’.

The ad’s final message is simple, ‘if it’s not gay, it’s not gay’.

Be a better ally

The ad has already been viewed more than 260,000 times. It is part of a larger campaign to teach people how to be good LGBTI allies.

‘We chose to address something small that contributes to much larger issues – homophobia, biphobia and transphobia,’ Rainbow Youth said on Facebook.

Rainbow Youth’s website has a page dedicated to allies. It includes tips about the correct language to use and information about different members of the LGBTI community.
