The actor will be a series regular when the show returns in June.

It looks like love might find Will Lexington (Chris Carmack) again on Nashville when the series returns next month to finish out its fifth season.

Will and his on-again, off-again boyfriend, Kevin (out actor Kyle Dean Massey), finally called it quits earlier this year after Will was tempted by fashion designer Jakob Fine (guest star Murray Bartlett) and he later revealed to Kevin that he didn’t want to move in with him.

Meanwhile, Rayna James (Connie Britton) approached Zach Welles (Cameron Scoggins), a young Silicon Valley entrepreneur, to help get her record label Highway 65 off the ground. Zach was revealed to be gay and after Rayna’s sudden death Will and Zach got closer and they eventually kissed on a date.

“Every single one of us knows that we’re going to die and armed with that information we are supposed to somehow go on living,” Zach told Will after their lip lock. “That is a reason to try to go through life in pairs, if you go through at all.”

Now it seems that the Nashville producers want to make the relationship work since Scoggins has been upgraded to a series regular when the show returns in June.

When Nashville moved to CMT and Thirtysomething creators Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz became the new showrunners it seemed that they were making a conscious decision to incorporate more LGBT characters into the series’ storylines. Trans actress Jen Richards had a small role as Juliette’s (Hayden Penetierre) nurse and they brought on Bartlett for a multiple episode arc.

Juliette’s plane crash and Rayna’s death were the main plots in the first half of the fifth season so hopefully Will and Zach’s relationship will get more screen time when the series resumes this summer.

Nashville returns with new episodes June 1 on CMT.
