One year ago today, the host and executive producer of CMT After MidNite, CMT Radio Live and CMT All Access, Cody Alan, came out as a gay man. For fans of country music, Cody’s coming out was both surprising and brave. Few people in what is considered a conservative world had been so open before.

In an Instagram post, Cody shared what it felt like to be celebrating one year as an out and proud gay man.

1 year ago today, I came out. I honestly can’t believe it’s been a year. being gay isn’t a choice I made, but something I’ve known about myself my whole life. I want to say thanks to my family, friends and so many new friends in the past 12 months, who have shown so much love. and to all those who are struggling with something…please know you’re not alone, no matter what cards you’ve been dealt. there are many pulling for you.❤️much love, c

In the last year, Cody has spoken at Pride events, shared stories on his Instagram of other gay men who have written to thank him, and in September, Cody announced his engagement to partner, Trea Smith.

I spoke with Cody today, and he shared with me what the last year for him has been like:

I’ve been moved by how accepting most people are. That was not exactly expected. In fact, I didn’t know what to expect. I’m thankful for a supportive partner, Trea Smith, who has helped me when it’s been difficult. And to the many dirt road, red state, country fans who think there’s no one like you–guess what? There is. Here’s to being who you are.

Thank you, Cody, for continuing to inspire us, and congratulations on one year of being out and proud!
