DC Comics revealed that their upcoming superhero movie Birds of Prey will feature gay and lesbian characters. The movie will feature two “gay coded” villains Black Mask and Zsasz, a lesbian police detective named Renee Montoya and bisexual villain Harley Quinn.

The movie will be released in 2020, following the events of the Suicide Squad. To be specific, Batman has disappeared and left a group of female heroes to be defending Gotham City which includes: Black Canary, Huntress, and Det. Montoya. Harley Quinn, having left former lover The Jokes, also joins the group in order to protect a young girl who has a diamond that is sought by the crime lord Black Mask.

Harley Quinn’s character has come out as bisexual numerous times, of which most notably was her kiss with villain Poison Ivy, while detective Montoya was outed as a lesbian by the crime boss Two-Face in the 2000s Gotham Central comic series.

Actress Rosie Perez will be playing Det. Montoya who will reportedly be dating a woman played by comedian Ali Wong. It is expected the two of them to kiss onscreen, which has never before been shown in a Marvel movie and will represent a huge moment in pop culture.

From the male characters, Black Mask will be played by Ewan McGregor. His character is a villain who wears a dark skull mask and likes torturing his victims. He’s a serial killer whose body is covered in marks, as he carves a mark on his body for every new victim of his.

If all of this news is true, it will be a very welcomed change since in all of the last 23 Marvel movies there basically hadn’t been any queer representation.
