It is not the first time when Disney plays with gay stories and same-sex relationships, especially in animated shows like “Star vs The Forces of Evil” and “Doc McStuffins” to name a few. This time, however, it goes all in by featuring the first gay storyline ever with the second season of “Andi Mack” coming up soon.
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis declared that:
Television reflects the real life world and today that includes LGBTQ youth who deserve to see their lives depicted on their favorite shows. Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus’ story unfold.
A Disney representative also stated that Disney’s policy is to present the subject in a completely child-friendly manner, in accordance to their viewers’ age and understanding. And that, in essence, the goal is to highlight the everyday problems LGBTQ members deal with and to promote universal inclusion and respect for all human beings.
It is a bold project and only future will tell how the general public will react to it.
