The first trailer for the new documentary American Heretics has just landed.
The film from directors Jeanine and Catherine Butler follows a group of ministers in rural Oklahoma who work to dispell the notion of the Republican Party as the “Christian” party. In Oklahoma, supporting liberalism or the Democratic Party is synonymous with heresy. These ministers want to separate the intolerance of the GOP from Christians by working toward racial equality, performing same-sex marriages and hosting immigrants in church services.
American Heretics takes a look at how Christianity and the Republican Party became so entwined, and at the hypocrisy of modern Christians who support a racist president like Donald Trump or who advocate discriminatory laws against queer people.
The film opens in select theatres July 12.
Frankly, this is a film we need now more than ever.
