In 2013 India’s Supreme Court reinstated ban on gay sex, and that had a huge negative impact on LGBT people in India.

In these hard times for the LGBT community, especially in India, a country that praises traditional family, Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil made a video to support same-sex love.

“When I was 12 or 13, I realised I wasn’t attracted toward the opposite sex but to the same sex. There was no internet… there was no one to tell me what it was,” he said in the Come Out Loud video.

He also revealed that it was hard to live as a closeted man in a royal family in India.

“Being brought up with servants and not many friends… no internet… it was a very confusing state.”

In the Come Out Loud video (that you can watch below), Gohil highlighted what he really feels, the need for freedom to love and be loved.

“All we expect from the society is love. Gay rights cannot just be won in the courtroom, but also in the hearts and minds of the people we live with.”

The Prince came out publicly in 2006, and his family disowned him. He started a non-governmental organization to support the LGBT community in India and educate gay men about the prevention of HIV.

On Oprah Winfrey Show he expressed his feelings towards the society in India and the way it treats gay people.

“When I say that the homosexuals are not free in India, we don’t have the freedom to love. All of us are scared. Imagine those who have fallen in love, they’ve had partners in their lives, they’ve had boyfriends, they want to go for long-term relationships — are now all scared. That’s where we are losing our freedom.”

“We’re all human beings. We should be treated equally and be given the rights which we have been denied,” Gohil said.
