After 11 memorable seasons on one of the longest running non-animated scripted shows on cable, Mac, the Christian fundamentalist-spouting, tough-talking “sheriff of Paddy’s” has come out as gay.
But perhaps the biggest news is that everyone on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia seemed to either suspect or know Mac was gay before he did.
The show, which originally aired on FX but subsequently moved to FXX, follows “The Gang,” a group of five underachievers: twins Dennis Reynolds (Glenn Howerton) and Deandra “Sweet Dee” Reynolds (Kaitlin Olson), their friends Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) and Ronald “Mac” McDonald (Rob McElhenney), and Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito), the man who raised Dennis and Dee. The Gang runs the dilapidated Paddy’s Pub, an Irish bar in South Philadelphia.
McElhenney, who is married to Olson in real life, had always been suspected of being gay despite his heavy emphasis on Christianity (and the male physique). But in the season 11 two-part finale, he tries to convert a gay couple on a gay-friendly Christian cruise only to find himself ‘converted.’
And fans have shown their love and support for his coming out. A tweet from @macdaddysnydes seemed to encapsulate the mood: “mac from it’s always sunny in philadelphia is a Confirmed Gay™ what a time to be alive.”

In contrast to Mac, his confident secular cousin, Country Mac (played by Seann William Scott), served as a foil playing an unabashedly gay man.
The two-part episode entitled “The Gang Goes to Hell” concludes tomorrow on FXX at 10pm. The show has been renewed for a record twelfth season.
