Jussie Smollett

“Love is freedom. Freedom is love.”

Jussie Smollet’s character might still be stirring up drama on Fox’s Empire, but in his new music video there is nothing but peace and love.

The video is for Smollet’s new single, “Freedom,” but the out actor-singer never appears in the clip. Instead the video focuses on Cynthia Erivo (from The Color Purple revival on Broadway) and Tika Sumpter (Southside With You) who play a lesbian couple in love.

The video cuts between the two women in bed together and traveling along the California coast in a jeep.

They eventually arrive at a bumpin’ house party where there is a mix of straight and same-sex couples—complete with some cool skull blacklight makeup.

“This video is about love. I wanted to show two people doing the everyday things that every single couple does,” Smollett said in a statement.

“I see nothing but beauty through the eyes of these characters we’ve created. I hope everyone else does as well. Love is freedom. Freedom is love.”

The song might not be as catchy as “You’re So Beautiful,” but it is a nice sweet tune celebrating the freedom to love who you want.
