In the new movie Papi Chulo, gay actor Matt Bomer stars as a gay weatherman down on his luck. During this tough time, he makes an unexpected friend.

Written and directed by John Butler, Papi Chulo is a ‘darkly comedic reflection on class, ethnicity, and companionship’ set against the backdrop of modern-day Los Angeles.

It follows Bomer’s character who has an on-air meltdown as a local weatherman following a break-up.

His characters takes his leave from work to focus on home improvement — and hires a Latino worker named Ernesto (Alejandro Patiño) to help. Despite a language barrier, the pair bond in a touching and inherently human way.

This Butler’s third feature film. He previously wrote and directed Handsome Devil and The Bachelor Weekend, which starred Andrew Scott.

Bomer has recently played a string of high-profile gay characters. He had a role on Will & Grace and starred in the Broadway play The Boys in the Band, which he’s returning to for a Netflix movie adaptation.

He was also recently cast as a gay superhero in the DC TV series Doom Patrol.

Papi Chulo comes out in US theaters on 7 June.
