When Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon came out as gay, his parents told him it’s ‘not a path’ he should follow

Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon is the gay son of a pastor.

He works as a janitor at his dad’s church in Catonsville, Maryland, but he’s also an aspiring singer-songwriter.

Harmon appeared on American Idol last night (10 March) to try to impress judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

But during his prerecorded interview, he revealed coming out as gay to his family didn’t go according to plan.

‘There are certain parts of me that do belong and there are certain parts that don’t belong,’ he revealed.

‘This is not a path that I should follow’

Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon then said: ‘I first realized I was gay when I was nine years old. I had a crush on a guy in youth camp.

‘I first came out to my parents and my family three years ago. The consensus seemed to be that this is not a path that I should follow.

‘There’s times when I do feel alone. The hardest part for me is seeing how difficult it is for my family. I’m hopeful that it’s an experience where we can learn to grow together.’

He wrote a song called Almost Heaven for the audition.

It’s a song about questioning if there is a place for him and for people like him in heaven.

After his performance, Richie told Harmon to throw away the broom and take up singing full time.

It was an unanimous decision to send him through to the next round of auditions.
