At last night’s rally in Cincinnati, President Trump claimed that if he is reelected, he will cure AIDS and childhood cancer “very shortly.” His gullible supporters cheered after Trump told them, “The things we’re doing in our country today, there’s never been anything like it. We will be ending the AIDS epidemic shortly in America, and curing childhood cancer very shortly.” In reality, Trump has slashed funding for HIV and AIDS research and, in some cases, stopped ongoing research on a...

“And I’m kind of blown away by it,” he says of the Jonathan O’Boyle-directed production currently playing at the Soho Theatre. “I think it is equal to the New York production or even better.” The LA-born/NYC-based Vernon first put on the show – inspired by the 1973 arson attack on New Orleans gay bar The UpStairs Lounge in which 32 people died – as a 2013 concert. Four years later, it was fully-staged Off-Broadway and has been performed at numerous...

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard’s gold medal-winning performance at the Pacific Games continues to reverberate long after the event, with a New Zealand women’s group demanding sports authorities put a stop to “unfair” competition. Hubbard, who competed for New Zealand in men’s weightlifting before her transition in her thirties, won two golds and a silver in three of the women’s heavyweight categories at the Games in Samoa earlier this month. She topped the podium...

Research conducted by Rainbow Community Kampuchea (RoCK) has found that over 80% of queer women and trans men have faced violence in Cambodia. The research is one of the first of its kind in the country. The study met with 61 LBT people, 23 of them being lesbians, four of them being bisexual women and 34 being trans men. Over half the participants (51%) were under the age of 35. The researchers also met with parents of LBT children, UN...

A new study has found that LGBTQ people are more likely to suffer from memory loss and confusion, both of which are early signs of dementia. The research was carried out by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The survey was carried out in a random phone survey across nine different US states. The survey asked 44,403 adults aged over 45, with 3% of these people identifying as LGBTQ. The adults were asked about their gender identity and...

A staggering 56% of people in the UK say they’ve never heard of a ‘drag queen’ before, which is hard to believe considering the rise of RuPaul’s Drag Race and famous British queens like Lily Savage and La Voix. What’s more, 70% say they’ve never attended a drag show. We think they need to get out more. The research also found that over half (58%) of Brits are unaware of the correct definition of LGBTQIA, despite government statistics estimating that more...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats see U.S. President Donald Trump becoming increasingly vulnerable to criticism about healthcare costs after the administration’s decision to scrap a proposal to lower drug prices, and 2020 White House candidates are rushing to seize the spotlight on the issue. The debate over the future of the American healthcare system has become a focal point of the Democratic presidential nominating contest. As Trump has failed to make strides to remedy the problem, Democrats are becoming more...

‘Straight Pride’ has been in the headlines for weeks as a group called Super Happy Fun America received a permit to hold their event on August 31 from the City of Boston. According to their website, they hope that the parade and platform will mean that “FINALLY STRAIGHT PEOPLE WILL HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD”. Pause for dramatic eye-roll. Instead of simply ignoring this childish, toys-out-of-the-pram, knee-jerk reaction to LGBTQ people getting more attention than our straight counterparts for just ONE...

(Reuters) - The Pentagon is rapidly assessing the United States’ rare earths capability in a race to secure stable supply of the specialized material amid the country’s trade conflict with China, which controls the rare earths industry, according to a government document seen by Reuters. The push comes weeks after China threatened to curb exports to the United States of rare earths, a group of 17 minerals used to build fighter jets, tanks and a range of consumer...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Amy Klobuchar unveiled a new plan on Friday to help lower the cost of pharmaceuticals purchased by seniors in the wake of the White House scrapping its own ambitious drug cost plan. Klobuchar’s proposal, which is also designed to invest in research for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and improving the stability of Social Security, would allow the government to negotiate Medicare Part D costs, which cover prescriptions for seniors. Klobuchar, a...

HIV virus (image via Depositphotos) For the first time, researchers have found a way to eliminate HIV from living animals. The approach combines two new technologies: slow-release antiretroviral therapy (known as LASER ART) which first suppresses the virus, then gene editing (known as CRISPR-Cas9) which effectively ‘slices out’ HIV-infected DNA. Dr. Kamel Khalili, at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, told the local CBS News affiliate that, “For the first time, we were able to eliminate completely replication competent...

One point for the “nature” side of the nature-versus-nurture debate. A new study suggests that certain biological traits — including birth order and handedness — are linked to male sexuality. For the study, newly published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, the researchers surveyed more than 800 adult men regarding their sexual orientation, their gender expression, and three specific biomarkers: handedness, fraternal birth order, and existence (if any) of non-straight relatives. The...

Scientist Azim Surani talked to the Progress Educational Trust annual conference in London this past month to share the results of his latest study. The study, which is currently being reviewed for publication in a journal, followed Surani’s research team as they tried to produce an artificial sperm and eggs.
