One gay man knew exactly how he wanted to make the 2019 Washington Nationals Night Out a lifelong memory, using the event to propose to his boyfriend. At the top of the seventh inning, Aaron got on one knee and popped the question to Teddy, according to MLB and People. Teddy said “Yes.”
You can see video from the emotional moment in a lovely tweet from the Nats Youth Academy. The Nationals also tweeted that the club “couldn’t be happier for Teddy and Aaron.”
The fans in the stadium equally reacted with applause and reportedly a standing ovation.
The Nationals Night Out is annually one of the bigger Pride Nights in Major League Baseball. This year marked the team’s 15th straight year of hosting the celebration of the LGBTQ community.
It may have gotten easy for many of us to take these Pride Nights for granted, but this kind of celebration of our community and acknowledgement of our relationships was impossible when the Nationals’ first unofficial Pride Night took place all those years ago.
Also celebrating the community that night was Sean Doolittle, pitched one inning while giving up two hits and no runs while wearing some special Adidas cleats, one with the traditional gay rainbow flag and the other with the trans flag. Doolittle is a long-time supporter of the LGBTQ community, from years ago when he was with the Oakland A’s.
All in all it looks like it was a pretty fantastic Night Out with the Nationals!
