Mermaids, a UK-based charity which supports trans and gender diverse children, launched a 24-7 crisis text service on Monday (27 May).

‘If you’re experiencing a personal crisis, are unable to cope and need support, just text “Mermaids” to 85258’ a statement from Mermaids said.

‘A trained Crisis Messenger Volunteer will introduce themselves, reflect on what you’ve said, and invite you to share at your own pace.’

‘You’ll text back and forth, only sharing what you feel comfortable with’.

The new service complements existing web chat, email, and weekday telephone counseling services.

It was launched in partnership with Shout, a crisis text service launched by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

A number of women’s rights activists have expressed their opposition to trans rights groups, as well as several high-profile figures.

This includes comedy writer Graham Linehan, , and .

Linehan has been particularly vocal in his opposition to Mermaids, and .

Eventually, after a review, the National Lottery approved funding.

‘What’s great about this review is that an independent third party has looked at all the arguments that would like to undermine our work and found no evidence to support the allegations that have been made’ Susie Green, the CEO of Mermaids, said.

What’s more, Prince Harryinvited the charity to join the Royal Foundation. This will be as part of the organization’s ongoing work on mental health.
