‘It was the best Valentine’s gift we could ever dream of.’

A gay Polish couple, superfans of 80s duo Roxette, got a huge surprise when they went to present at an awards ceremony.

Jakub Kwiecinski and David Mycek were in Stockholm to attend the QX GayGala 2017 after being asked to give an award to Eurovision star Måns Zelmerlöw.

But as they went on stage to present, the host came out and revealed someone had a gift they wanted to give them before their wedding.

Per Gessle, from their favorite band Roxette, walked out with a bottle of champagne.

‘I acted like a freak, I reacted like a freak. We really didn’t know anything about it,’ Jakub told. ‘It was the best Valentine’s gift we could ever dream of.’

Following the on-stage surprise, the couple went backstage with Per and chatted for around 20 minutes.

‘He said he spoke with Marie [Fredriksson] the day before and she also sent us best wishes. She doesn’t do public appearances because of her health condition.’

The Polish couple made headlines when they made a lip sync video to Roxette’s Some Other Summer seeking to increase the visibility of LGBTI people in a homophobic country.

Jakub, a TV presenter, revealed later the video sparked homophobic comments and death threats. Because of the media attention, it persuaded Portuguese officials to grant them an exception and will allow them to get married on the island of Madeira where they met and fell in love.

‘For the first time in our lives, we feel really proud to be gay,’ Jakub added to GSN. ‘Standing on the stage in front of so many people, seeing a standing ovation, and a pop legend wishing you all the best for your marriage…. nothing bad in the past could possibly matter anymore.’
