‘How would you feel if your own privacy is invaded? How would you feel if tables are turned against you?’

Ever wonder what it’s like if one day naked images of you end up on the internet for hundreds and thousands for people to see?

How would you feel knowing that the ‘delete’ button is useless? And that traces of those pictures, gifs or videos would always be out there in the world, in the hands of strangers, in websites you visit, as well as websites that you don’t?

Gay man Lokies Khan from Singapore is speaking out about his experience of having his gay sex video leaked on the internet.
In an interview with ‘Dear Straight People,’ Khan describes that the incident makes him feel a loss of control.

‘The main reason why [the incident] affected me so much was because this is not something I want people to see.’

Khan explains that even though some of the pictures on his Instagram account may show a lot of skin, they are at least within his control.

‘Things that I post on Instagram are things that are within my control, are things I want people to see, [that] I’m comfortable with people to look at. But these gifs of me on Tumblr are not within my control. I did not give consent. I did not know it was there.’

To make things worse, some strangers even messaged Khan online to give him compliments.

‘What am I supposed to say? Thank you?’ Khan asks in anger.

He adds that there are too much of ‘backstabbing,’ ‘slandering,’ ‘gossiping,’ ‘shaming’ and ‘judgment’ coming from within the gay community.

‘This is an issue. This is a problem in the community that we are facing, and people think it’s OK — it’s not,’ he says. ‘There are people out there who wouldn’t have the mental capacity to cope with this. These are things that are potentially lethal. It could destroy someone’s life.’

Khan also offers comfort for other victims: ‘You are not alone. I get what you’re feeling. There is nothing to be ashamed of.’
