Yesterday, the Michigan senate has passed a bill that could sentence to 15 years of prison anyone who will engage in same-sex intercourse. The main purpose of the law that includes the bill aims to stop animal abusers from buying pets, yet the bill refers to gay sex as well, bestiality being compared with sodomy. Subjectively, the bill bans anal and oral sex between two people.
“A person who commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature with mankind or with any animal is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for no more than 15 years,” SB 219 bill states.
“The minute I cross that line and I start talking about the other stuff, I won’t even get another hearing. It’ll be done,” Republican senator Jones said about removing the implication of the phrase “either with mankind.”
“Nobody wants to touch it. I would rather not even bring up the topic, because I know what would happen. You’d get both sides screaming and you end up with a big fight that’s not needed because it’s unconstitutional,” he continued.
It is unconstitutional to ban consensual sex between adults as it stands against the 14th Amendment, yet the SB 219 bill ban it. Practically the law is unconstitutional but no one inside the Senate is willing to act.
