“It’s a slice of heaven.”
Seeing loving families led by queer parents can be an antidote to the hateful rhetoric used against us. And for gay men who dream of becoming fathers, seeing gay couples starting a family of their own can be a real inspiration.
Below, we share the stories—and photos—of 16 dads who know what kids need most is love, stability and support.
Frank Lowe
Frank Lowe blogs about life as a “gay-at-home dad,” and was even interviewed on the Today show about life as a single father. “I’ve been asked, ’Where is your wife?’ and ’Where is his mommy?’” Lowe revealed. “I’m very quick to say, ’I don’t have a wife and he doesn’t have a mommy, and this is what I do, I’m a stay-at-home dad.”
Devon and Rob
In addition to raising their two sons, Devon Gibby and Rob Zimmerman volunteer as LGBT youth mentors. They recently helped install the landscape at the Encircle Resource Center, which provides a safe space for queer youth in Provo, Utah. (Devon was also involved in conceiving the design.)
Richard and Carlos
Known online as “The Real Dads of New York,” Richard and Carlos Seigler-Carter knew each other for 14 years before getting married in 2015. A year later they adopted their son, Timothy. The three guys live in Brooklyn.
Dustin and Burton
Married in January 2015, North Carolina dads Dustin Patrick Smith and Burton Buffaloe are the parents of one-year-old twins Stone and Holland. The couple says any time they can spend together as a family is “a slice of heaven.”

Joshua and Jeremy
Dads Jeremy and Joshua Petersen snapped a selfie in bed with their 10-month-old son, Anakin, after a long day at Disney World. The pic was so adorable it became Gays With Kids’ most shared photo ever. Jeremy and Joshua also have a 3-month-old daughter, Izley.
Trystan and Biff
In 2015, Trystan Reese and Biff Chaplow became fathers to Hailey and Riley, whom they adopted from Chaplow’s sister. But the family got bigger—and made headlines—after Reese, who is trans, gave birth to son Leo over the summer.
Adam and Jason
Adam Gentile and Jason Babcock say their life just started nine months ago, when son Tristan arrived.
“As gay parents, we have a responsibility to be the best parents possible because we are under a microscope everywhere we go,” they told GaysWithKids.”It’s a challenge we are more than happy to live up to.”
