Netflix has released the first full trailer for its upcoming revival of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, and clearly the theme of the reboot is the importance of “family.”
The official synopsis reads:
“Mary Ann (Laura Linney) returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane.”
Charlie Barnett, Murray Bartlett, and Laura Linney (images via screen capture)
As the trailer rolls on, characters old and new extol the positive effects of living at 28 Barbary Lane.
Page’s character shares, “Everything that made me me came from Barbary Lane.”
Others chime in as well:
“That place saved my life.”
“This is more than just an apartment, obviously. It’s where we grew into us.”
And Murray Bartlett (HBO’s Looking), who assumes the role of Michael ‘Mouse’ Tolliver, muses, “Once you feel seen, like Anna Madrigal makes you feel seen, you don’t want to leave.”
In addition to Linney and Dukakis reprising their characters, the revival cast includes RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Bob the Drag Queen, Matthew Risch (Looking), Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll) and Zosia Mamet (Girls).
According to reports, the producing team has made an effort to hire a diverse LGBTQ-inclusive cast and crew, including an entirely queer writing team.
Netflix’s ten-part Tales of the City begins streaming June 7.
