Rideshare app Lyft is in the fast lane when it comes to inclusion as it today (30 May) launched gender-neutral pronouns for riders to select on the app.

Drivers will now be able to see your preferred gender. Although, drivers will not be able to select their own, .

In the past, the app has been voted one of the most on the Corporate Equality Index.

Riders can now select their pronouns to let drivers know in advance. Lyft hope that doing so will help normalize the practise and help non-binary and gender-nonconforming drivers and riders alike feel included.

Now, Lyft users can select from the following:

  • They/them/theirs
  • She/her/hers
  • He/him/his
  • My pronoun isn’t listed
  • Prefer not to say

Furthermore, the umbrella of gender-neutral pronoun options makes Lyft the first ride-sharing network to offer this in the US and Canada. The move was part of their 2019 Pride Campaign.

And as part of the update, Lyft also partnered with the National Center for Transgender Equality. The organisations paired-up to add name changing support for trans drivers.

Lyft will now provide $200 financial support to drivers for legal and admin fees for name changes.

Nicole Sgarlato, a Lyft employee, told Gay Star News: ‘Lyft played such an important part in my journey, coming full circle in helping their efforts to support the transgender community at large has been a privilege and an honor.

‘I cannot express how grateful I am for taking part in this year’s Pride campaign.

‘Lyft was one of the first job openings I applied to after starting my transition due to their values in diversity and equality.’

‘We want to use every interaction to promote respect and inclusion on our platform for riders and drivers,’ Lyft head of diversity and inclusion Monica Poindexter said.

‘This campaign delivers that for our drivers and riders.’

However, Lyft drivers have, over the years, come under fire for not so inclusive actions.

In March this year, a gay man claimed his Lyft driver told him he for being gay.

But the San Francisco-based company has lent its support over the years to the LGBTI community through various initiatives, such for voters during the midterm votes.
