Gus Kenworthy and Matthew Wilkas have parted ways after four years.

The Olympic freestyle skier and actor – whose credits include Gayby and Bonding – met over Instagram in 2015, shortly after Gus historically came out as gay to the world in an interview with ESPN.

Last year during the Winter Olympics, Gus received massive praise after he memorably kissed Matthew on live television. It was lauded as being a significant moment in visibility of LGBTQ athletes.

A representative for Gus confirmed to US Weekly and People that the couple are “taking time apart” and mentioned that the split was amicable. “They love and support each other and remain close friends,” they said in a statement.

Gus has been vocal in the past about the “ups and downs” in Wilkas’ relationship due to their careers.

He told Entertainment Weekly last year: “With my job, I’m always on the road, so I think that makes it pretty tough. I think that’s hard for any relationship, and long-distance is tough.”

However, he called Matt an “amazing communicator” and added: “So we kind of just talk through everything and work through stuff, and I’d say it’s a pretty good relationship. I’m happy about it.”

Gus is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming ninth season of American Horror Story. Titled 1984, this season of the critically-acclaimed horror anthology series will travel back to the 80s (duh) and will be set at a summer camp.

It will also star Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Leslie Grossman, Matthew Morrison, DeRon Horton, Zach Villa and Angelica Ross. This time around, AHS veterans Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will be sitting it out.

The highly-anticipated follow-up to Apocalypse will premiere on FX on 18 September.

We recently rounded up five of the best fan theories that we could totally see happening when AHS: 1984 arrives this Autumn – check them out here and watch the 80s-inspired teaser trailers below.
