You are used to see him posing macho and cool and you know him from the Terminator series and, prior to that, from winning Mister Olympia 7 times in a row. He is now a legend in bodybuilding, as well as in the film industry, and he has been an icon for a lot of people. And still is. Many believe he is the greatest athlete in the history, having reached the perfect and most aesthetic body, but his early years as a sportsman and a movie star were quite difficult.
Everyone agrees with the fact that he is a controversial personality, but there may be some things that not everyone knows about him, like the fact that he was involved in the gay pornography industry, especially during a time when he was not that famous. In the 70’s it was very hard for young bodybuilders to make a career out of their activity, because they the public opinion didn’t thought of them as macho and the bodybuilding business was poorly paid. This is why it wasn’t uncommon for young athletes to appeal to some wealthy gay men’s appreciation and funds. This is what Arnold did in mid 70’s, when he spent several days in the company of a Spanish gay photographer, a millionaire with a flair for well looking athletes. He was even subjected to some photo sessions in 1977, which led to Arnold appearing in the After Dark gay magazine. And some of those photos show more than you would have thought.
Even earlier than that, in late 60’s, he was also involved in a close friendship with another wealthy gay personality, a certain John Dixey, a British millionaire, who was known to enjoy the company of young and good looking boys. It was a common way by which bodybuilders could get some funding, at the start of their career, and Arnold certainly seized this opportunity.
But this is not all. It seems like even his parents suspected him of enjoying the idea of being with men. His room was filled with posters containing naked men, which led to a serious beating that he received from his father. “He ran after me with a belt and beat me” Arnold said in 2012, in an interview for 60 Minutes. “I don’t know if my mum thought I was gay, or if she just thought there was something off. She asked the doctor ‘Can you help me? I don’t know if there’s something wrong with my son because his wall is full of naked men. All of Arnold’s friends have pictures of girls above their bed. Arnold has no girls’”.
We agree that Arnold’s past is extremely hot when talking about his love affairs and that most of these involve women (there are even allegations of sexual misconduct and perversions), but what’s clear is that he also kept a close eye for good looking men in his youth.
