Gay couples set new trends for wedding rings

Gay couples are embracing the special importance of the Big Day. In fact in the first half of 2015 over 2200 gay men got married in England and Wales, and that’s excluding civil partnership conversions.

New traditions

According to Woolton & Hewitt, a gay owned jewellery business specialising in same sex engagement and wedding rings, their customers are not simply adopting age old wedding traditions but are adapting them. Couples are creating new traditions that put equality at the heart of the ceremony. For example it’s becoming standard for gay couples to walk down the aisle side by side and for their respective guests to be treated as a single group of friends and family.

Symbols of love

The exchange of rings is so central to the marriage ceremony that even guys who normally don’t wear jewellery are buying wedding rings. As true symbols of love that will be worn for the rest of your life, they are very special.

To match or not to match?

The gay community know its mind on this question. Gay couples almost always opt for matching wedding rings. Often the rings are identical. Sometimes they vary in just one feature. For example, one ring with diamonds and one without, or one in white gold and the other in rose gold, or only the width is different. In this way equality is symbolised whilst still reflecting the individual personalities of each partner.

Only the best will do

Another strong trend is that gay guys go for top quality wedding bands: 18ct gold and palladium 950 are the most popular precious metals. Platinum 950 comes in a close third. When diamonds are in the mix then only the finest whites and internally flawless stones will do. And why not? After all, you’re going to be together forever.

Colours of the rainbow

What colour should your wedding rings be? White is the most popular – that is to say rings made entirely of 18ct white gold or palladium 950 or platinum 950. Next are two-tone combinations of white gold with an accent of yellow or rose gold. An emerging trend is for multi-colour wedding rings which are available in combinations of three, four or even a stunning rainbow of five colours. And for that extra je ne sais quoi you can even add colour co-ordinated diamonds.

Engagement rings

The key trend for engagement rings is that, it’s official, gay men look great wearing diamonds. If you’re planning a surprise proposal think a single stone brilliant for sparkle, a beautiful baguette for elegance, and for dazzle the more diamonds the better!
