Gay-dads

Spokesperson confirms dads not in shortened version of the ad, but says it’s not because of the backlash

A gay family will no longer appear in a new shorter advertisement for McCain chips after hateful social media backlash.

The gay couple, Lee and Mat Samuels-Camozzi, said they’ve been called perverts, ‘sick’ and pedophiles.

They featured on the ad campaign, along with their 20-month-old son Carter.

For a cameo of about two seconds, the family have dinner as Lee kisses Mat on the cheek, while holding the baby.

A spokesperson for McCain denied the new 30 second clip (the original was one minute) left out the dads because of the backlash.

The spokesperson told the Guardian: ‘There’s only so much you can say in 30 seconds.

‘Our campaign is all about celebrating the diversity of family life and not everybody’s a normal family.

‘We’re still promoting them, they’re in the posters and we’ve got them on social media,’ the spokesperson said.

‘We’re proud of our little family’

At the time of the backlash to the McCain chips ad, Lee told the

Daily Record: ‘We’ve had dozens of hateful comments.

‘One of the most hurtful compared us to perverts, saying “Whatever next, society accepting pedophiles?” We’re shocked this kind of attitude exists in the 21st century.’

He added: ‘We’re proud of our little family.’

The original script says: ‘Grans who put you to bed and tell you not to believe in ghosts. Or maybe it’s dad who tucks you up.

Dad. Daddy. Two daddies. Long-distance daddies.’

Then the revised script says: ‘Grans who put you to bed and tell you not to believe in ghosts. Or maybe it’s dad who tucks you up. Daddy. Long-distance daddies.’

Watch the new version of the advertisement and compare the two.
