Tom Cullen and Chris New in WEEKEND
In honor or Pride, Mr. Man has ranked the top 5 underrated mainstream gay movies (that means no CMBYN or Brokeback). The steamy and totally NSFW video list includes the following films: My Own Private Idaho, God’s Own Country, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Maurice and Weekend.
These are all fine films. All of these pics have their fair share of male nudity. And some of the sex scenes featured in the vid are–yeah-they’re totally hot.
I do agree with the choices on this list, mostly. I’d honestly say God’s Own Country and especially Weekend simply belong on any list of the best gay movies period. I’m not sure they’re “underrated,” because both movies were adored by critics and have substantial reputations. Weekend has a 95% score on RT; God’s Own Country has a 97%.
For starters, Weekend belongs in the top five if not top three of any list of the best gay movies. It’s a masterpiece. I’d rank it alongside Carol and Moonlight and such as just THE BEST, not necessarily underrated. Frankly, God’s Own Country deserves to be in that company, too. It’s so glorious and moving. And pretty freaking sexy at times.
Lastly, though I definitely appreciate this list from Mr. Man, as well as pretty much everything Mr. Man does, because I love movies and I love nude scenes as much as anyone–the one movie I was hoping would make the cut is Stranger By the Lake. Sure, it’s foreign. But it was an arthouse sensation when it was released. Same goes for Shortbus–although that wasn’t an exclusively gay movie. Both movies I’ve just mentioned boast the distinction of featuring un-simulated sex scenes, though body doubles were used for Stranger By the Lake.
