The one thing most critics of new gay movie Beach Rats commented upon this summer was the explicit sex scenes.
The film – directed by Eliza Hittman – sees British actor Harris Dickinson in the role of Brooklyn teen Frankie; a closeted guy who roams webcam chatrooms looking for sex as he comes to terms with his sexuality.
The scenes certainly don’t hold back, and the actor has already spoken about being comfortable enough with his body and sexuality to film them.
“It was a new experience,” he told OUT earlier this year. “But I was comfortable doing it. I’m comfortable in my sexuality and in my body now.
“You have to come to terms with the fact that you’re going to bare yourself on-screen and it’s going to exist there forever, but I cared enough about the character that I just wanted to throw myself into it.”
As you can see below, Harris really committed to the role.
There are plenty more scenes that are way more revealing in the film, but you’ll have to go watch it to see them.
But aside from the explicit nudity, Harris said that Beach Rats comes at a vital time for the LGBT+ community.
“Given that for certain groups it’s a terrible time politically, I think it’s that much more important that Beach Rats was made,” he said. “And it doesn’t glorify the coming-out process — it actually presents it from a negative perspective.
“But I hope those watching it can find a sense of freedom in themselves. No good ever comes of suppressing your true feelings, no matter who’s around you, or where you’re from.”
Beach Rats is already available to stream and download in the US, but will be released in UK cinemas on 25 November.
