All Bolivian transgender people who wish to change their names and gender on their ID cards should apply to the Ministry of Justice and go through an examination at the psychologist to get the necessary permission.
The Minister of Justice of Bolivia Virginia Velasco Condori claimed that soon transgender people will be able to change their name, sex and gender legally on their legal documents.
At the press conference in La Paz Velasco she said that the Justice Department is going to change the laws and regulations related to such registration procedures as issuing passports and making records in the book of civil registration.
It should be mentioned that this amendment was suggested to the legislature by the coordinator of the trans-national movement in Bolivia three years ago.
It must be noted that the LGBT people are highly discriminated in Bolivia. The report of 2014 stated that over the period of ten years about 55 killings of representatives of LGBT community in Bolivia were committed and 11 of them were transgender people.
It isn’t the first time when Bolivia was mentioned all over the Internet due to some homophobic statements. Previously the President of Bolivia had to apologize for calling the health minister of the country a lesbian in his assaulting comments.
Five years later Bolivian president Evo Morales also mentioned at one of the conference some offensive words: “The chicken we eat is loaded with female hormones. So, when men eat it, they tend to deviate from their manhood.” He also added that he non-genetically modified chicken help him avoid becoming gay or effeminate.
So, in spite of any attempts to help LGBTI movement and people who live in Bolivia, this country is still thought to be a pretty homophobic country.
