In March, Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law The Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, now known simply as HB2, which outlaws transgender people from using public restrooms in accordance with their gender identity and bans local ordinances that would in any way protect gay people from discrimination in housing, employment or accommodation.
The Daily Show decided to take a closer look at how easy it is to take advantage of the discriminatory law by setting up a ‘no gays allowed’ fast food truck in Raleigh that refuses to serve anyone its employees believe to be gay.
“I wanted to show North Carolinians what HB2 would look like in action, so I rented a food truck, made up a fake barbecue company and set out to refuse service to people by telling them they’re gay,” said correspondent Roy Wood Jr.
“Let’s be clear,” he added. “I don’t care if they’re gay or not, but HB2 says I can do this Jim Crow-level sh*t and nobody can stop me.”
After turning away several customers for their perceived sexual orientation, a pastor sticks up for his discriminated friend, saying, “Even if he were gay…you should still serve him.”
