Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced that crosswalks in Midtown that were temporarily painted the colors of the rainbow as a symbol of LGBT Pride will now be installed permanently.
The announcement was made on June 12, the first anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting that took the lives of 49 people last year.
“Our city has rallied around our LGBT community, and we have not shied from demonstrating our unity and solidarity,” Reed said in a statement. “And with this spirit, I cannot think of a more important time to reaffirm our unwavering and unqualified support for our LGBTQ residents.”
The rainbow crosswalks will be placed at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and 10th Street, a spot the mayor acknowledged for its history as a hub for Atlanta’s LGBT community.
More than 20,000 people signed a petition back in May in support of painting the crosswalks permanently.
Robert Sepúlveda Jr., star of Logo’s Finding Prince Charming, actually helped bring the rainbow crosswalks to Atlanta in the first place, and shared his joy on social media that they will now be a permanent part of the city.
