You have seen this for decades. It is part of the pop culture and it is more than obvious that society has been constantly promoting this idea over the years. But what makes women prefer gays as close friends rather than straight guys? Researchers have been puzzled by this aspect for quite a while now and they have elaborated a theory recently involving some psychological studies.
There have been identified few causes leading to this behavior and here they are:
- Gays provide comfort
This is due to the fact that they are not seen as potential mates and this is also true for how gays view women. None of the parties involved in the platonic relationship will feel any sexual tension like in the case of straight male-female friendships and this will provide the woman with an increase level of comfort. She instinctively knows she will find a genuine friend in a gay individual, with whom she can talk to and share life experiences free of any sexual tensions. A 2012 study showed that women trusted gay individuals in matters of dating advices that they did so for straight males. The study is not complete, but it certainly provides a pretty good insight in the matter.
- Gays are completely unbiased
This is related to the first study findings and suggest that women tend to trust gays more than straight guys on matters of dating and relationship advices for one simple reason: gay individuals have no potential hidden agenda, so none of them would give an answer like “You need a serious and loving man like me”. It seems like women appreciate gays’ advices even more than straight women’s ones. The reasons are exactly the same. Who knew, right? This has been shown through 4 studies which took place in 2015 and the conclusions were that women would perceive the judgments coming from gays to be more honest, because they knew that there are no hidden motives involved.
- Women consider gays more affectionate and competent
Which is why it seems like many women in leadership positions would rather hire gays over straight guys. So their trust goes beyond mere dating advices. Another recent study that took place in 2015 showed that many straight women would prefer hire gays and work with gays than with straight guys. The reason is that they are being perceived as more competent, warmer and open.
But what about gays? How open are they to these platonic relationships with straight women. Well, here is the good news. According to a 2013 study, gay men also preferred straight women when considering dating and relationship advices.
The reason is that they actually value the women’s positive attitudes towards homosexuality, contrary to what most straight males show. Even if some of the studies are not yet complete or confirmed, it seems like we are on the right track.
