The story of Landon Patterson is nothing short of outstanding. She was born a male and lived as one until 2014, when she finally decided to make the transition between genders. The change was something she feared will attract criticism and negative public feedback, but decided that it is worth the risk. “When I came out as a trans I was so afraid that I was expecting a lot of hate, but surprisingly there wasn’t much at all” she declared, fears that she also expressed on her Youtube channel, along with the desire for a change: “I am Landon Patterson, I am not a boy I am a girl and I am starting a journey that I couldn’t be happier and more excited about. This is such an awesome moment for me and I was just really tired of being afraid and scared of what everyone would think.”
But now, another huge step in Landon’s life has been made, as she was elected Homecoming Queen of the Oak Park High School in Kansas City. All those present at the time cheered and congratulated the winner and it was something that not even Landon expected. “To be elected homecoming queen was an amazing feeling.
It felt too good to be true. Right now I feel complete, I feel like a princess” she said, in the post-ceremony interview. Her friends and family were beside her and she had all the support she needed. “To have my students and my friends vote for me makes me feel welcomed and loved for who I am”.
Her case is not the only one in recent history, though. In 2013, 17 years old transgender student Cassidy Lynn Campbell was elected homecoming queen in Huntington Beach California High School. “I was overwhelmed by what a statement it would be, how big it would be” she said at that time, after she cried when her name was announced. This performance was particularly important since the town that granted her the title was considered among the 25 most conservative in the USA in 2005.
It seems like there are no other words that can express what happened better than Landon’s can: “Just be you. Life is too short and you just have to embrace who you are.”
