The explicit gay orgy scene will break down any taboo around portraying homosexual sex and relationships
A bold new film featuring an explicit orgy scene is about to shake up the Asian film scene.
Sodom’s Cat is the daring new original production on Asia’s first LGBT streaming service GagaOOLala.
Huang Ting-Chun’s film follows five Taipei men that meet for a group-sex party after meeting on a gay app. It explores the psychological and emotional consequences of contemporary hookup culture.
The explicit orgy sequence, full of symbolism, also serves as commentary to the sex ‘roles’ in gay culture, because each of the five characters represent an animal – a bear, dog, cat, wolf and peacock.
Huang got fed up with seeing international gay films that explored explicit sex and decided to broach the taboo subject at home.
‘This is a film talking about love through sex. Though it is X-rated, it is the emotions behind our current sex culture that I want to explore,’ he said.
Everything’s more queer, but not enough
Huang told Gay Star News that even though there are ‘more and more’ Taiwanese queer films, none have explored hookup culture and sex in this way.
‘I want to discuss this topic because it is core to gay culture nowadays. With the quick development of social networks, gay people can now be open about their sexual orientation without the embarrassment of barking at the wrong tree,’ he said.
‘Therefore, gays have become one of the biggest groups on personal social networks, and they use it as a place where they can get what they want.’
Sodom’s Cat has toured the festival circuit for about a year now. It was even shortlisted for the prestigious Iris Award at the Taiwan Queer Film Festival.
It’s clear the film has resonated with audiences, which is exactly want Huang wanted from his film.
‘I hope they (the audience) can get both moved and inspired, I hope everyone can see themselves reflected in this film and not afraid about people seeing them as sleazy,’ he said.
‘No matter how many emotions these experiences bring – happiness, anger, depression, sorrow etc – they are all part of life. We grow up and mature tanks to these emotions and experiences.’
Huang’s favorite part of making Sodom’s Cat was unsurprisingly shooting the orgy scene. He mades sure the actors got to know each other well and rehearsed with them for two months before filming.
‘From getting to know each other to learning about the characters… all of this really elevated that sequence to something else,’ he said.
‘It the result of a collaboration. The process is the most wonderful thing for me.’
