Last week I had the great pleasure of attending not one, but two tapings of RuPaul’s new talk show “RuPaul” which will premiere on June 10th and have a limited three-week run on select Fox Television Stations. The Supermodel of the World turned Emmy-winning reality host has wrapped on fifteen episodes in hopes that his show will get picked up for a wig-snatching full season.

The new weekday hour-long talk show is hosted by RuPaul and best pal Michelle Visage and Drag Race judge Ross Mathews serve as correspondents and sidekicks who bring the comic relief.
RuPaul is no stranger to talk shows since he co-hosted with Visage The RuPaul Show which aired on VH1 from 1996-1998. But at the age of 58, this new talk show is a new iteration of RuPaul’s witticisms and personality. He will sit down with guests like James Corden, Paula Abdul, Adam Rippon, Ricki Lake, Blac Chyna, Senator Cory Booker, Matt Bomer, and more to spill the tea on important topics in popular culture, entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, and politics.

Audiences who attend the RuPaul taping are asked to walk the runway as they enter the studio. We stomped down the runway to some of RuPaul’s most iconic tunes like Kitty Girl and Cover Girl all while RuPaul was watching and selecting a ‘Slay of the Day’. During the show, RuPaul announces the Slay of the Day and asks the audience member to come up to the runway and give their best runway walk once again.
During commercial breaks, RuPaul, Michelle, and Ross talked with audience members and took audience questions. As a change in format for studio audiences, RuPaul has no audience hype person to get the audience all riled up—RuPaul feels that his audience knows what to do and when to do it and based on my experience at the show, that is the absolute truth!
If you listen to the podcast RuPaul What’s the Tee? with Michelle Visage, you know that aside from some side-splitting hilarity, RuPaul and Michelle serve up a ton of wisdom and you get to be a part of a personal and inspiring conversation between friends that makes you feel right at home. RuPaul’s new talk show gives you the same feeling. It is a relaxed and honest conversation amongst friends on RuPaul’s living room couch and every audience member (and viewer at home) gets the privilege of being a part of the experience.
For many who feel like we have had an over saturation of RuPaul’s Drag Race in the last couple of years that has developed into a toxic and aggressive fandom—this talk show is a dose of RuPaul that we can appreciate. It’s a great time and I for one hope it continues beyond it’s three-week trial run. Watch out, Ellen!
