Peter Capaldi confirmed last night that he will bow out as the twelfth Doctor after the upcoming Christmas special of Doctor Who later this year.

But that immediately left fans of the show wondering: just who is the favourite to be the thirteenth incarnation of the Time Lord?

Bookies have placed British actor actor Ben Whishaw as the favourite to take of BBC’s flagship sci-fi series.

The actor was the favourite to take over from Matt Smith back in 2013, but instead went on to star in a string of Hollywood films, as well as BBC Two drama London Spy.

If Ben was to secure the role of The Doctor, he’d be the first openly gay actor to portray the time-travelling character.

Richard Ayoade, Rory Kinear and Miranda Hart are also among the bet-makers’ frontrunners to snag the role.

Idris Elba, Jennifer Saunders and Sheridan Smith are outside bets at the moment.

“One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best,” Peter Capaldi told fans live on the radio as he announced his departure from the show.

“From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.”

Chris Chibnall – who’s best known for his work on Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, as well as hit ITV series Broadchurch – will take over from Stephen Moffat as the new showrunner from 2018.
