Smith and his co-writer Jimmy Napes took home the Best Original Song prize for ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, which they wrote for the soundtrack to 24th Bond film Spectre.

“I read an article that said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world,” Smith said as he collected his prize.

Smith had performed ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ earlier in the evening at the L.A. awards ceremony hosted by Chris Rock. Smith and Napes’ song beat The Weeknd’s ‘Earned It’ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Til It Happens To You’ to the songwriting prize, which was previously won by Adele in 2013 for her Bond theme ‘Skyfall’.

Anohni, the musician formerly known as Antony Hegarty, was also nominated for this year’s Best Original Song award, but revealed earlier this week that she would be not be attending the ceremony after the Academy failed to ask her to perform her nominated song on the night.
