Sydney

Hey, Hugh Jackman!

The future looks bright!

Sydney, one of the world’s first major cities to welcome the new year, did so with an epic New Year’s Eve fireworks display at Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Attended by an estimated 1.5 million people, the show featured a section with rainbow-colored fireworks and matching waterfall effect in honor of Australian parliament passing marriage equality earlier this month.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore announced plans for the prideful display earlier this month on Twitter.

“This New Year’s Eve, I can’t wait to see the rainbow waterfall cascade from Sydney Harbour Bridge at midnight to celebrate a historic year for Sydney’s LGBTI community,” Moore wrote.

Fun fact: Hugh Jackman personally designed 20 seconds of the overall show featuring gold and silver fireworks.

Lauren Price and Amy Laker from Sydney became the first same-sex couple to marry in Australia after receiving special permission to wed three weeks before marriage equality takes effect in the rest of the country. The official date same-sex couples can begin tying the knot is January 8, 2018.

Grammy-winning diva Cher recently teased that she will appear at the 40th annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, one of the biggest LGBT events in the world, in March.
