Spaghetti Sauce

Two men have been charged with burglary, grand theft, and arson after trying to set a mutual ex-boyfriend’s house ablaze with a washcloth and a can of spaghetti sauce.

Early Tuesday morning, John Silva and Derrick Irving allegedly broke into the Orlando house of a man they’d both dated, reports Click Orlando. He wasn’t home so the pair heated up a jar of spaghetti sauce on the stove and left a towel near the burner to catch fire.

“He was trying to make it look like I left the stove on,” the victim, who wasn’t named, told police. “But who gets up 2am and fixes [spaghetti?]”

He called authorities hours later when he realized someone had put a towel over his home security camera. Police say the house reeked of smoke when they entered, and the washcloth had just started to burn.

Deputies later arrested Silva and Irving, who wore a bull costume during the heist and insisted he’d just stopped by the victim’s house to grab some personal items. But a search of their vehicle revealed an empty jar of Ragu sauce, as well as a handful of valuables from their ex’s home.

Their motive isn’t clear, but the victim had a few guesses.

“It started out as a relationship that lasted about a week,” he said, although it is unclear which man he was referring to. “I’ve let him use my car for four months, maybe he’s angry about that. Or maybe he’s angry because I gave him $150 to fix his teeth.”

Silva is being held on $25,500 bond, while Irving is being held without bail because he reportedly violated his probation.
