Groundbreaking LGBT+ film Moonlight is one of the major contenders at this year’s Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
The film scored mentions in some of the ceremony’s biggest categories, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Mahershala Ali, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Naomie Harris, Directing for Barry Jenkins and Best Picture.
Unsurprisingly, La La Land also fared well, with Ryan Gosling scooping a Best Actor nomination, Emma Stone nominated for Best Actress, and it will go up against Moonlight for Best Picture.
La La Land has been given 14 nominations in total, equalling Titanic’s record-breaking tally back in 1998. All About Eve was also honoured with 14 nominations back in 1950.
Disney films Moana and Zootopia will go up against each other for Best Animated Feature Film, while Arrival, Nocturnal Animals and Hacksaw Ridge also scored major nominations.
The 89th Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and will take place in Los Angeles on 26 February.
