The singer has just turned 30
British singer Calum Scott has shared the touching story of his coming out journey in a video that has gone viral on YouTube.
Published to coincide with National Coming Out Day, Scott revealed in the video that he lost some friends after he came out. The video shows vintage footage of Scott as a young child and stylized shots as an adult.
Scott became a household name after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent in 2015 and has been an outspoken on LGBTI issues since then.
The singer who recently turned 30 recounts the painful part of realizing his sexuality but explained music helped him express his honesty.
‘I remember learning as a kid that love meant loneliness and confusion,’ Scott said in the video.
‘When my friends started to care about getting girlfriends, I really didn’t. I started to think literally, “what’s wrong with me” and “why can’t I be normal like everybody else”.’
Scott said watching his friends walk away from when they found his sexuality was really hard.
It wasn’t until he went on Britain’s Got Talent and let the world know about his sexuality that he ‘found the courage to be honest’.
‘I know that there are people young and old struggling with the same questions, and living with that relentless fear and heartbreak. I make the music I do because I want to inspire the right kind of conversations,’ Scott said in the video.
‘If one less kid can grow up without hiding who they are along the way or having to believe that who they love is something that will make them lonely, then everything I went through will be worth it.’
The singer is on tour for the rest of the year in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and London.
