driver's license exam
We laugh genuinely. Life couldn’t be better.

I was a ball of nerves during my driver’s license exam. I was afraid I will fail miserably and disappoint not only my parents who have been throughout the course, but myself as well. I was sitting on my bed in the room and wondered what will happen tomorrow. My roommates are somewhere outside, having fun.

My phone beeps, I’ve got a new instant message. It reads, “Stop being so nervous, you will do great tomorrow.” Pffft. It is from the guy I am dating right now, it is still nothing serious. It is easy for him to speak, he got his license two years ago and is one of the calmest and most composed drivers I’ve seen. My phone beeps again.
“Come on, I want to see you before your exam. I’ll be there to get you in 20 mins.” When I ask why, he just says he has something for me. Weird, I thought. We went out just yesterday, why does he want to see me so often, we’re not together or anything.
Twenty minutes later, he is in my campus and I greet him as I get into his car. We get some food and drive without a direction through the night. We talk and at some point we make out. It’s been awhile since I’ve liked someone, like, for real, and this guy might have me falling for him.
“I’ve got something for you,” he says at one point after our little making out session while we both look at the beautiful sight of the capital in the distance. “But you’ll see once I drive you back home.”
I suddenly become nervous and find myself concerned whether he likes me.

“Is it something bad?” I ask. The answer is no and any further questions are silenced with yet another passionate kiss.
Somewhere around 2 or 3AM he drives me back to my campus and when I turn to say goodbye, he takes my face in his hands and kisses me. Then he smiles and wishes me a good night. As I get outside the car and turn around to close the door, I see him texting on his phone and immediately after that he tells me to check my texts, then drives away.
I get inside the apartment building and look for my phone. I’ve got a message from him from just a few seconds ago that says, Look inside your hood. I struggle with taking out my coat and inside the hood there is a little piece of paper. As I unroll it, I see a car and a few hearts drawn on it. It says, “A voucher for taking your driving test successfully tomorrow. Belongs to a beautiful boy named Tom Addams.” Oh my god! This is so simple and yet so kind and touching! He tried to calm down my nervousness regarding the test and I find myself grinning like an idiot as I try to get in quietly and not wake up my roomies.
The next day, I take the voucher with me.
And my test ends successfully!
“You didn’t give your turn signal just now, love,” he says by my side as I drive my own card now. Then he laughs at my expression and adds, “It’s okay, I’m just kidding. Remember how nervous you were about your driving test back then?”

It’s been four years since that day and not only do I drive without any hesitations now, but my husband is by my side.
“Yeah,” I respond and take his hand, “I wouldn’t have done it without you and your clumsy drawings of a car.”
And we laugh genuinely. Life couldn’t be better.
