Mark Hamill teases Luke Skywalker’s sexuality: ‘If you think Luke is gay, of course he is’
While promoting the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Oscar Isaac seemed to playfully tease the sexuality of his character, Poe Dameron, during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. If Poe or another new Star Wars character were to be gay, they need not necessarily be the first in the galaxy far, far away. At least according to Mark Hamill, who repeated his stance that Luke Skywalker’s sexual orientation is ambiguous.
“Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out’. They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer,” the actor told The Sun. “If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
Hamill previously addressed a question regarding Skywalker’s sexuality in a direct message to a fan on Twitter in January:
@amediumbear i asked if Luke was bisexual and!!! pic.twitter.com/SMzGxHZjDN

In February, The Force Awakens director, J.J. Abrams, told press at the US-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards that “it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in [the Star Wars] world.”
Hamill is set to reprise the role of Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VIII with director Rian Johnson. The film is set to premiere on December 17, 2017 with new cast members Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
