And viewers were not happy about it.

The Australian reality show Bride and Prejudice recently aired a heartbreaking episode that found a gay man being discarded by his parents when he tried to invite them to his wedding.

Chris never really talked about his sexuality with his religious parents, but knew going into the conversation that they don’t approve of him being gay.

“You know I’ve got very strong beliefs on that…situation,” Chris’ mother, Yvonne, replied in a heartbreaking scene that found them all crying. “So for us, that’s not an option.”

His father stayed silent through most of the exchange, but added that his son will have to live with his decisions.

When his parents said they only wanted to have contact with their son and not his fiancé, Chris told them they either can see all of him, not just part of him, or otherwise not see him at all.

“Well, if that’s the way it’s gotta be, then that’s the way it’s gotta be,” Yvonne replied.

Australian viewers quickly took to Twitter to share their outrage over the devastating scene, which left Chris in tears, saying he feels like he no longer has parents.

Buzzfeed Australia reports that, as heartbreaking as the whole scene was, Chris’ fiancé has extremely supportive parents who are welcoming Chris into their home and family.

  1. His parents are stupid
He is amazing and should NEVER change who he is for anyone

  2. To be placed in the position of having to beg parents for the love and support any child should be given, unconditionally, means it was never there in the first place.

I came to that realization 25 years ago with my own parents. And since removing them from my life, I’ve never been happier. A tremendous weight was removed from me.

  3. Then those parents failed their job because of rejecting their own kid. They need to be rejected themselves to understand what they just did.
